Benue State Government is contemplating the establishment of a model National Mathematical Centre in Makurdi.
Governor Samuel Ortom gave this indication on Thursday during a courtesy call on him at the Benue People’s House, Makurdi by the Director and Chief Executive of the National Mathematical Centre Abuja, Professor Stephen Onah.
Correspondent reports that Mathematics as a subject has remained a nightmare to most students at all levels of education.
Statistics shows that every year, the number of Students that pass the Subject at credit level at SSCE is far lower compared to other Subjects.
The Governor told his guest that he personally suffered from the nightmare to pass Mathematics at the WASCE level during his time till he rewrote the Subject and obtained credit out of share determination, stating that the closeness of the Centre would help the people of the State in that regard.
He expressed happiness with the appointment of Professor Onah as the Chief Executive of the Centre and urged his Staff to work closely with him to enable him succeed.
Earlier, the Director and Chief Executive of the National Mathematical Centre, Professor Onah had explained that he and his team were before the Governor to inform him that the Centre had introduced programmes such as Mathematical improvement project, Nigeria International Sciences Olympic, procurement of NMC text books and instructional materials as well as workshop for training of Mathematics Teachers and students on the use of the instructional materials.
He stated the resolve of the Centre to deliver on its mandate of developing appropriate initiatives of international standards to rekindle and sustain interest in the study of mathematics and the sciences at all levels in the Country.
