Governor Samuel Ortom has confirmed Federal Government’s award of N1.8 billion contract for the construction of a major drainage in Makurdi to avoid a repeat of last year’s flood in the state.
The Governor made the confirmation when he received the Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr. Solomon Dalong at the Benue Peoples House, Makurdi on a courtesy call.
He stated that when work on the drainage is completed, the devastating effect of flood in Makurdi and its environs would be mitigated.
Governor also acknowledged the completion of several ecological projects executed by the Federal Government in the state which the Minister had come to inaugurate.
While commending President Buhari for his support to the state against its invasion by militia herdsmen, Governor Ortom said though security challenges in the country were not peculiar to Benue, sponsors of those killing people in the state were known.
He said it was worrisome for a group, Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore to openly threaten and carry out attacks on a state in resistance to a legitimate law without any arrest by relevant authorities, noting that ranching was the only solution to herders crisis in Nigeria as it is done globally.
Governor Ortom congratulated the Youth and Sports Minister on the qualification of the Super Eagles of Nigeria for the 2018 World Cup in Russia and prayed God to grant them victory in the tournament.
Mr. Dalong had arlier said he was in the state on the directive of President Buhari to inaugurate and handover ecological projects executed by the Federal Government to the host communities.
While condoling Governor Ortom as well as government and people of the state over the massacre of farmers by militia herdsmen, the minister noted that Benue was known to be peaceful and hoped that the good old days would return.
He wished Governor Ortom the best of luck as he canvases support for his reelection in 2019, expressing the hope that the forthcoming general elections would be decided based on issues and not sentiments.
