The Benue State government has announced plans to convene a security summit and to establish a civil airport in Makurdi.
Governor Samuel Ortom made the disclosure today at the Benue State Executive Council retreat holding at the Benue People’s House Makurdi.
He explained that there was need for neighboring states to meet and brainstorm over similar security challenges hence the imperative for the summit.
On the airport he said the current one in Makurdi was a military facility with limitations adding that when the civil one would be completed it would avail farmers and business people who deal with perishable commodities the opportunity to export the produce among other things. The Governor who stressed the importance of security as one of the priorities of his administration, promised that he would spearhead the convening of the summit with neighboring states to evolve ways of tackling insecurity in the North Central axis so as to guarantee a stable atmosphere that could promote the safety of lives and property as well as boost foreign investment in the state.
He noted that as key officials of government, the new appointees and all those in positions of trust must key into the state’s blue print “Our collective vision for a new Benue” with a view to implementing it for overall development of the state.
The Governor promised not to interfere with the running of both the legislative and judicial arms of government but allow them to function independently to ensure a harmonious co-existence among all tiers of government.Governor Ortom pledged that he did not want to be remembered as the Governor that would build personal empires, divert public funds and extend dominion over the economy of the state and enjoined all the appointees of government to deliver quality service to the people of the state.
He also urged them to familiarize themselves with the manifesto of All Progressives Congress, APC, and the government’s vision so as to achieve the five point agenda of his administration.
