Yesterday evening social media activists of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, posted reports on social media platforms that the Benue State Governorship candidate of their party had been attacked with guns and other dangerous weapons at a Catholic Church in Agasha, Guma local government area.
One said the attack took place right in the church the name of which he didn’t mention while another claimed that the attack took place after the church service at an unnamed place and time.
They claimed that a pregnant woman was stabbed and taken to a hospital that was not mentioned while others were maimed and only God knows what happened to them, as it were.
As Media Director of the Ortom /Abounu Governorship Campaign Organization I placed calls to Agasha to ascertain the veracity of the report and luckily some of the contacts I got were people who attended the service but none confirmed the report of the attack.
One of those I contacted asked the parish priest about the report but he denied that any such thing took place in his church.
Later, upon demands that the name of the place and time of the attack and also pictures including one said to be that of an attacker arrested be posted the activists posted a blurred picture that could not display for scrutiny with no mention of the place and time where the attack occurred.
On the other hand, our standard reports on PDP-sponsored attacks on APC supporters and property have always included the name of the place of attack, the time, some of the victims, and very clear photographs.
In several cases we also indicated whether the matter had been reported to the police contrary to yesterday’s report that failed to state whether such a matter had been reported anywhere apart from media platforms.
Moreover, many times we reported to the security agenciesto and also alerted members of the public about the evil plans of the ruling party through press statements, unfortunately such uncovered plans always came to pass.
Nevertheless, we have to notify the general public once again that by making unfounded claims of a nebulous attack on its governorship candidate in Agasha yesterday, just like it did about a similar attack in Gbajimba earlier in the year, the PDP had set the stage to launch unprecedented attacks on APC supporters and property in the state.
The current plan which we also uncovered and disclosed to the Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, Professor Bem Angwe, when he visited the state last week is well planned with clear objectives.
These include kidnappings as well as massive arrest and incarceration of APC stalwarts throughout the state especially in strongholds of the party so as to disenfranchise such people, as well as intimidate and discourage others from participating in the electoral process.
Sadly, the execution of the plan commenced with kidnappings of APC supporters in Katsina-Ala and massive arrests of people in the town as well as Adikpo and Vandeikya.
This unfortunate development comes on the heels of the peace pact which political leaders in the state including those in the PDP signed and the Prayer Pilgrimage for Peace initiated by Benue Catholic Bishops which they also subscribed to.
The APC went further to submit to peace efforts of the Mdzough U Tiv as well as the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, with incidentally the PDP shunned.
Apart from preaching peace and appealing to supporters not to resort to self help the APC governorship candidate, Chief Dr Samuel Ortom has publicly condemned violence where it has occured several times while one is yet to read a statement condemning such from the ruling party.
APC leaders always report infringements on their rights to the police and other law enforcement agencies while1 the PDP celebrates their so – called claims of attacks in the media.
Just like we appealed to the Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission, the relevant authorities must act quickly on reports about violence sponsored by the ruling party and its plans to unleash more as the restraint and tolerance of APC supporters has been stretched to the limit.
