Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, has disclosed that he has released funds to meet all the accreditation requirements of both the College of Health Sciences and the Benue State University Teaching Hospital brought to his attention by the university authorities.
With the development, he expressed hope that the problems of accreditation of the College of Health Sciences would soon become a thing of the past and students who had stagnated for 12 years would graduate.
Governor Ortom spoke in Makurdi today when an accreditation team from the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria pad him a courtesy visit at the Benue Peoples House.
He expressed the hope that the team would do its work thoroughly in order to ensure that medical schools do not produce half-baked graduates and described the medical profession as a very delicate one as it handles issues that deal with life directly.
According to the Governor, if any area required strengthening the team should not hesitate to bring it to his attention and expressed hope that at the end of their assignment all stakeholders concerned would smile.
Speaking earlier Provost of the College of Health Sciences of the Ebonyi State University and team leader, Professor Perpetus Ibekwe said the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria is charged with the responsibility of accrediting medical students from universities and was in the state to handle the accreditation of such at the Benue State University.
He expressed appreciation for the hospitality accorded the team since arrival and stated that they received all the required documents needed for their assignment as soon as they arrived.
The team leader assured that they would swing into action to perform their assignment and forward their findings to the council the result of which would in turn be conveyed to the university authority.
While commending the state government for establishing the College of Health Sciences, Professor Ibekwe promised that they would do their best and hoped that their findings would put smiles on the faces of all concerned.
