A youth group has embarked on clearing sand deposits on some roads in the Makurdi metropolis as a demonstration of support for the governorship aspiration of Chief Dr. Samuel Ortom in Benue State.
The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Makurdi North Youth Alliance For Ortom, commenced work this morning at the University of Agriculture junction in North Bank.
They used shovels to pack the sand which rain had washed into the major road into wheel barrows and dumped at designated places.
Coordinator of the group, Mr. Terver Gbenda, disclosed that the organization which has 40 members drawn mostly from Iharev youths from the five council wards of the Makurdi North State constituency derived inspiration from Chief Dr. Ortom’s love for community service.
Mr. Gbenda stated that they commenced work at that point because the sand deposit there had narrowed the road leading to accidents at the junction and assured that they would carry out the exercise on a regular basis.
He said the group had also obtained permission from the Chief Imam of the Makurdi Central Mosque and the NKST Makurdi Central to carry out similar exercises in their vicinity adding that they planned to extend their service to Gboko and Otukpo in due course.
A traffic warden at the spot, Mr. Peter Indyer, welcomed the development saying the clearing would ease his work because hitherto he had problems controlling big vehicles which usually left one lane for the other to avoid the sand.
Messrs Janet Ayua, a seller of recharge cards, Good Adam, her neighbor and also orange seller, Terngu Vembe, a driver, all who operate nearby, and Solomon Ankar, a civil servant, commended the gesture pledging support for the Minister of State, Industry, Trade, and Investment’s aspiration on PDP platform.
Senior Special Assistant to Benue State Governor, Mr. Abraham Kwaghngu who passed by commended the youths for their initiative and urged others to emulate them.
The group used the opportunity to give hand bills of Chief Dr Ortom to passersby.
