The Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, has disclosed that the state government plans to establish an information and communication technology development agency to warehouse and drive its strategies in the sector.
He made the disclosure today in Abuja when he paid a courtesy call on the Director General and management staff of the National Information Technology Development Agency, NITDA.
“Benue State is a barren land with regard to ICT and we have a partner here with whom we can collaborate to deliver quality services to our people in the sector,” he said.
“We intend to establish the Benue Information Technology Development Agency, BITDA, to warehouse and drive our policy formulation and implementation in the ICT sector, that’s why we’ve come to the relevant place.”
According to the Governor ICT remains one of the greatest tools for employment, wealth and opportunities creation adding that his administration cannot afford to ignore the sector.
He said the state has four computer centres in the three senatorial districts across the state that have not been properly utilized and requested collaboration to establish one in each of the 23 councils in the state as well as maximum utilization of the existing ones.
In his remarks, the Director General, Mr Peter Jack pledged to work closely with the state government in delivering on the agency’s mandate to deploy ICT to transform the country in all sectors.
“We cannot do that without reliable partners like you,” he stated.
Mr Jack described Governor Ortom as a humble, respectful and transformational leader who has demonstrated progressive tendencies by moving quickly to utilize opportunities which others ignore or take for granted.
He said the Benue State Governor was the first state Chief executive to visit the agency during his tenure and the second in its entire existence.
The Director General listed policy and implementation strategy, establishment of the agency, e-agriculture portal, and capacity building as areas in which the agency and the state government could collaborate.
He conducted the governor round a pilot solar kiosk in Abuja.
