A special expanded security seminar opened Thursday in Makurdi to brainstorm on the sustenance of peace and stability in Benue State.
Participants are drawn from among traditional rulers, farmers, Miyetti Allah, State Joint Security Task Force among others.
The security seminar is coming in the wake of the relative peace being enjoyed in the State for some months now and the need for its sustenance.
An initiative of Governor Samuel Ortom, the seminar aims at also consolidating the relative peace that has been achieved between the Farmers and Fulani Herdsmen who have recorded incessant clashes in the past.
Declaring it open today at the Benue People’s House, Makurdi, Governor Ortom urged Members of the Public to cultivate the habit of volunteering information to relevant Security Agencies in order for them to track down criminal elements in the Society.
Governor Ortom during the seminar, constituted a Security Committee at the State chaired by the Adviser on Security with heads of other Security operatives as members with a call for replication of same at the Local government and Ward levels with a charge on members to, among other terms of reference, restrict foreign herdsmen from entering the State.
He charged Fulani Herdsmen and Farmers to avoid acts that could bring about clashes leading to loss of lives and property, adding that his government would not tolerate the situation whereby herdsmen carried their cattle to trespass farmlands with Farmers in return killing their cattle thereby resulting to violence.
Representative of the Acting Tor Tiv, Chief Sule Abenga, described the Seminar as timely as it would help forestall any clash between herders and Farmers over farm lands especially now that Farmers were into harvesting of their farm produce.
On his part, the representative of Och’Idoma, Chief John Anteyi, appealed to the Committee to commence documentation of resident Fulanis in the State and urged particularly those at the Local level to help with useful information about their visitors.
Also speaking, the Coordinator of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria in the State, Alhaji Gallus Gololo, promised on behalf of members to cooperate with the Ortom administration to ensure that there was cordial working relationship between them and the government.
