Benue State Governor-elect, Chief Dr Samuel Ortom has assured that the same God who helped in making him Governor will also enable the people to collectively salvage the state from its present precarious situation.
He spoke at the interdenominational church service organized by the Christian community in the state which was held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cathedral in Makurdi yesterday.
Chief Dr Ortom who reminded the people to reflect on how difficult it was for him to become Governor yet with their prayers God helped enjoined them not to despair on account of what he described as the unfathomable decay in the state but rather trust the divine for a reversal of the situation.
He expressed appreciation to the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, for adopting him as its governorship candidate long before the election and gratitude to God for blessing the adoption.
The former Minister of State, Industry, Trade, and Investment said he hoped to obtain wisdom for statecraft by governing with the fear of God which shall translate to core values including transparency, accountability, fairness, justice, selflessness, forgiveness and reconciliation which he said would make peace, unity and development inevitable.
Chief Dr Ortom assured the community that he would make issues of reconciliation, people’s welfare and security which Bishop Wilfred Anagbe, Bishop of Makurdi Diocese, highlighted in his sermon priority on assumption of office.
He said particular attention would be given to the resolution of the incessant herders and farmers’ clashes.
According to him creative thinking was required to surmount the current challenges and pledged that his administration would create the enabling environment for the private sector to thrive so that numerous indigenous entrepreneurs would emerge in the state and boost its economy.
In his sermon Bishop Anagbe had urged elected leaders not to compound the hardship of the people but rather seek inspiration from the Holy Spirit to provide purposeful leadership that would enhance the development of the state.
Highlights of the occasion included prayers for the outgoing and incoming administrations particularly for Chief Dr Ortom and his Deputy, Engr Benson Abounu, their spouses and other elected leaders.
