Governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Benue State, Chief Dr Samuel Ortom, has assured his supporters that he would receive and scrutinize the handover notes of the incumbent, Dr Gabriel Suswam, and urged them to remain calm and law abiding.
He spoke at a meeting with youths from Makurdi metropolis held at the Smile View Hotel, in the state capital.
The meeting was part of peace building efforts arising from the recent attacks on his supporters and campaign offices across the state by thugs sponsored by leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
Chief Dr Ortom stated that from his interactions with people across the state he was convinced that they had accepted the message of change being preached across the country and would certainly boot out the ruling PDP in the next general elections.
The former Minister of State, Industry ,Trade, and Investment stated that the pulling out of two former national chairmen of the party, Chief Audu Ogbeh and Chief Engr Barnabas Gemade, a serving Senator, together with himself, a former member of the PDP National Working Committee as well as several other stalwarts from that party to team with Dr George Akume, a former governor on the party’s platform was an ominous sign for the party.
He said the exit of the first President of the country on the platform of the party, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, from its ranks coupled with PDP’s lack of capacity to secure lives and property and make life better for citizens have signified the final death knell for the party.
Chief Dr Ortom stated that in the foregoing the fortunes of the state would soon be thrust on the shoulders of the APC in the state hence the need need for them to exercise restraint in the face of the current provocations in order not to compound the already bad situation in the state.
He said while he readily forgave the youths who were used in the attacks because poverty had made them vulnerable he prayed that God would visit their sponsors who held Bibles and swore to protect lives and property with judgment.
The former Minister stated that he had already demonstrated capacity for employment creation and youth empowerment through the Oracle conglomerate which has generated jobs for more than 400 adding that if given the mandate he could do more and eradicate thuggery in the state.
Speaking earlier leader of the youth groups and several other leaders stated that they had identified with Chief Dr Ortom on account of his vision and antecedents and were committed to working for the realization of his aspiration.
But they complained of persistent harassment from PDP thugs and requested protection to pursue their legitimate business and freedom of association.
