Former Minister of State, Industry, Trade, and Investment, and Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, governorship aspirant in Benue State, Chief Dr Samuel Ortom, has assured delegates of the party in the forthcoming primaries that as a grassroots politician who rose from humble beginnings he would represent their interest best.
He spoke yesterday(3rd December, 2014) during interactive sessions with the delegates from the Benue North East Senatorial District popularly called Zone A.
Chief Dr Ortom stated that in order to get the best results the messenger with the relevant skills in a specialized area should be given the opportunity to deliver in that field adding that since the governorship was a political position a hard core politician like himself was best suited for it.
The former Minister stated that having served as a council chairman, party administrator at the state and national levels, as well as minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria he was conversant with the yearnings and aspirations of the people, their terrain and has acquired the necessary experience to hit the ground running if given the mandate.
He said as a farmer himself he was aware that value addition to agricultural produce through processing remains the only way to create wealth for farmers as well as numerous employment opportunities.
The former Minister stated that although he would add value on all sectors, his priorities would be industrialization, attraction of investment into the state, and the boosting of commercial activities as initiatives to tackle unemployment and the attendant security challenges and provide economic empowerment.
He said he demonstrated his capacity for industrialization by establishing the Oracle conglomerate which has offered more than 400 jobs to people adding that as someone who fought and defeated poverty he would replicate the feat for the state if given the opportunity as governor.
Chief Dr Ortom reiterated that if given the mandate he would anchor his administration on the fear of God which shall give him wisdom for statecraft and enabl him to entrench the core values such as transparency, selflessness, accountability, fairness, justice, honesty, forgiveness and reconciliation which shall engender peace, unity and development.
In separate responses the delegates said as politicians themselves they were determined to vote for him on account of his antecedents as an experienced politician, successful businessman and philanthropist who has made enormous contributions to the development of the state as well as the fact that he was one of them.
They described Chief Dr Ortom as the engine room of politics in the state for decades having been tried and tested at all levels of governance from which he emerged with an impeccable record of service.
