The D Division of the Nigeria Police in Makurdi yesterday(10th March, 2015) authorized the Federal Medical Center, Makurdi to release the body of the late Michael Chikor for burial following the receipt of a medical report that did not find anyone responsible for his death.
The Divisional Police Officer in charge, Arit Ekpe, a Chief Superintendent of Police, gave the approval in her office in the presence of representatives of the family, the Acting Farm Manager of Oracle Farms Limited, Mr Robert Ortom, and two members of the Independent Print-Media Publishers Association of Nigeria, IPPAN.
Although she did not disclose the full contents of the report the police officer said all righteousness had been fulfilled with regard to investigation.
Those present included the immediate elder sister of the deceased, Mrs Lucy Ajai, and his children, Barnabas Chikor and Queen Ezema, as well as pastor of the Deeper Life Bible Church, Kura, of which he was a member, Pastor Iorvihi Terzungwe Joshua.
Former Logo local government Deputy Chairman, and publisher of Ontiv International Magazine, Mr Kundushima Akaa, was also present.
Members of the family expressed gratitude to Chief Dr Ortom, owner of the farm and governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Benue State, for providing accommodation for their loved one while he was alive and for funding his funeral arrangements.
They said they suspected no foul play in the demise of the late Chikor maintaining that his passage was an act of God.
The late Chikor, 47, an indigene of Ayilamo in Logo local government area of the state had been given temporary accommodation on the premises of Oracle Farms Limited, on humanitarian grounds, according to the Acting Farm Manager.
“In the afternoon of Monday, 2nd March, 2015 I received a call from the farm that he collapsed and died some meters from his residence and called to inform Chief Dr Ortom who directed that I report to the police immediately which I did,” he stated.
“Officers from the Police D Division in Makurdi accompanied me and some staff of the farm and we picked the body and deposited at the mortuary of the Federal Medical Center, Makurdi.”
According to him, representatives of the family approached the management of the farm and the police to allow them take the body for burial but the former Minister of State, Industry, Trade, and Investment insisted that an autopsy be conducted to ascertain cause of death.
The Acting Farm Manager expressed the condolences of the management and Chief Dr Ortom to the family of the deceased which he said demonstrated considerable fortitude and understanding on the loss of their beloved one and prayed God to comfort them and also grant the soul of the deceased eternal rest.
