Governor Samuel Ortom today directed the Urban Development Board to demolish the lock-up stalls being constructed at the Makurdi local government secretariat with immediate effect.
He gave the directive after a visit to the secretariat.
The Governor said when he was informed of the development he did not believe it was true and expressed shock when he personally confirmed it.
He directed that the Caretaker Chairman, Mr Joseph Gbashima, who authorised the construction should bear the cost of demolition.
He stated that apart from being an eyesore, allocation of shops to traders within the secretariat posed a security threat and exposed the conduct of government business to outsiders.
Governor Ortom stated that as a municipal council steps should rather be taken to beautify its secretariat to make it more presentable.
He charged those vested with the responsibility to oversee public property to safeguard and protect it against encroachment.
Special Adviser on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr Titus Zam, told the Governor that he had earlier directed that the construction be stopped.
