More than 5000 Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, members across the 17 council wards in Gboko local government have dumped the party and opted for the All Progressives Congress, APC at a rally held at the JS Tarka Institute of Political Affairs in Gboko.
Spokesmen of the decampees, Adue Jov and Emmanuel Ortserga, disclosed that they took the decision as an expression of support for the realization of the senatorial and governorship ambitions of Senator Dr George Akume and Chief Dr Samuel Ortom at the forthcoming polls.
The decampees surrendered their PDP membership cards to the state chairman of the APC, Comrade Abba Yaro who expressed appreciation to them for taking a wise decision early to change what he described the ineffective government in the state.
The rally was witnessed by an unprecedented crowd of party supporters akin only to the famous Gboko’83 political rally organised by the defunct National Party of Nigeria, NPN.
Speaking at the occasion, Dr Bem Melladu, zonal campaign secretary for the senatorial directorate commended the people of the area for remaining steadfast with the resolve of the APC to kick out the PDP from both the federal and state governmnet in the forthcoming general elections.
He dispelled insinuations that the party was divided in the area and called on members and supporters to queue behind the leadership and ensure that the party wins the forthcoming general elections at all levels.
Senate Minority Leader, Senator Akume urged the people to vote out the PDP because according to him, the party has not shown any commitment to the cause of the state since the administration of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan came into power.
According to the former Governor the current challenges in the state required a matured and focused person such as Chief Dr Samuel Ortom and Engr Benson Abounu who he said have the capacity to change the fortunes of the state for the better because they were experienced and honest people with the fear of God.
He called on the people to obtain their permanent voters cards, protect them and vote for APC candidates at the forthcoming polls as well as ensure that their votes count.
The APC gubernatorial candidate, Chief Dr Ortom reiterated the resolve of his administration when voted into power to create jobs for the teeming youths and wealth for the people of the state through industrialisation, boosting of the private sector and attraction of investment.
The former Minister of State, Industry, Trade, and Investment stated that he rose from humble beginnings at the Gboko motor park to his present status and has acquired requisite experiences through various strata of leadership in the country which he said have exposed him to the challenges confronting the people him and placed him in a better position to provide solutions.
He urged the people not to be intimidated by rumours that the PDP was planning to rig the elections but to rather ensure that they collected their voters’ card which shall enable them to.
