The United Nations, UN, has congratulated Governor Samuel Ortom, his Deputy, Engr. Benson Abounu and the entire people of Benue over the state’s recognition as one of the areas where the programme, Delivering as One, DaO, introduced by the UN has succeeded in Nigeria.
The Resident Coordinator of the UN in Nigeria, Ms Fatma Samoura, delivered the congratulatory message today during a courtesy visit on the Acting Governor of the State, Engr. Abounu at the Benue Peoples House, Makurdi.
Ms Samoura who was represented by Mr. Samuel Monanyi Nyambati, said only Benue and Cross River States were commended by the UN Evaluation on United Nations Development Assistance Framework, UNDAF Two on Delivering as One, DaO. She said the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund, UNICEF, has been the lead agency in Benue of DaO since 2010.
She said in the Joint Work Plan signed today between Benue and the UN, a total of 107 activities are undergoing implementation in the state as part of the collaboration between ministries, departments and agencies of the state and UN agencies.
The UN representative thanked Governor Ortom for honouring the state’s commitment of paying Government’s counterpart for the implementation of projects and programmes supported by the international organization as well as advocacy for integration of UN collaboration into the state budget.
Responding, the Acting Governor, Engr. Benson Abounu, thanked the United Nations for recognizing the state’s efforts at development.
He said Benue has been leading in several areas including immunization and education, stressing that the long standing relationship between the state and the UN had yielded a number of benefits for the people. He announced that the HIV prevalence in the state has also dropped drastically to only 4%.
Engr. Abounu added that the plan of the Benue State Government is to ensure that every ward in the state has at least one primary health centre, maintaining that the Ortom administration does not pay lip service to development issues.
Highpoint of the courtesy visit was the signing of the Benue/UN DaO Annual Work Plan for 2016 which was witnessed by top Benue State Government officials and members of the UN delegation.
